I grew up in this town. Redcliff (one word). My shop is 1 block away. It was a very sad day to see it torn down. Many watched and reminisced. Far as I understand, this was one of the last remaining drive in’s around here.

Like many others, I remember this from being a kid in the 1970s and the message I got was that he died in the battle. But when you actually listen to each lyric, he never actually says that. He just says Comanche is "wounded and weak," that he "fell," and that he's "battle-scarred and torn." And actually the instruction to Comanche is that he should "hold his head up high" despite what happened.

Obviously johnny Horton got one thing wrong. Commanche was captain Miles Keoghs horse. The detail that was putting down wounded horses (there were other survivors that were now being ridden by Sioux, Cheyenne and Arapaho warriors or pulling travois) the detail was commanded by a good friend of keoghs. When he found keogh and commanche he couldn't do it so commanche was brought back to ft lincoln and nurses back to health, never to be worked again. After he regained health, the 7th was stationed at ft Riley KS. Where he lived the life of Riley.

We owe the American Indians our TOTAL RESPECT! We owe EVERY THING to them. As for the privilege of living in this country. We're still not helping them to live a Happy life. We still make them poverty stricken forced to live on reservation under the worst conditions. We need to Help them, instead, the FOOLS in the White House would rather spend Millions on providing for the Illegal Alians. Vote Trump back in and personally visit with him to get things rolling to get the Indians the treatment they deserve to be able to be Happy and Free as other Americans are become what they want to be without any restrictions and Totally Tax Free because they are the original Americans!!!

I Strongly Feel for ALL the Native Americans. No people were Murdered, have their Lands Stolen from them, constantly LIED to,Taken Avantage of,Broken promises. They were only trying to protect themselves their families and survival of their peoples. Many misguided people branded them as the BAD GUYS when in truth they were ALL INNOCENT VICTIMS! Mostly at the hands of the U.S. Government and others only because they were of another race , another creed, and religion. They are the ones who did their best to live alongside with the White man. If any body needs Retribution it's the American Indian not the blacks.

I knew this song as a small child. I've often cried thinking that beautiful horse had died at that battle. I'm 69 years old and found these Johnny Horton songs again. My big brother had Johnny's Greatest Hits album. He left it at home when he joined the Air Force in '61. I would listen to it over and over wishing he'd come home. We lost my brother 3 years ago. I don't know if he ever knew Comanche had survived. I'm so glad I stumbled on this and read the comments. Thanks to whomever shared that historical fact with me.
